World Famous Historic Regional Baskets
Thomas Smith’s Trug are the original makers of the famous Sussex Trug Garden Basket used by gardeners all around the World. Our traditional Royal Sussex Trugs are made from locally coppiced sweet chestnut for the handles and rims and cricket bat willow for the boards that form the body of the Trug. First made famous at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 when Queen Victoria purchased some of Smith’s Trugs personally. Later our company was to receive the Royal Warrant of Queen Victoria, the only company ever to have received such an accolade. Our South Down Contemporary Trugs are made using European and Scandinavia birch plywood and were sold to the Crown Estate here in Windsor Great Park for over 20 years. There are a lot of shapes and sizes from which to choose and a great deal of history behind our famous Trug Baskets. Come and see our craftsmen, trainees and apprentices at work using mostly the old fashioned methods of preparing our Trugs by hand. You can be assured of a very warm welcome. You might even see us at shows in Europe! You can purchase our Trugs from anywhere in the World via our website by selecting the part of the World where you live and selecting the Trug you would like. All prices shown include packing and courier prices so there is nothing to add at check out.
