Beneath the Northdown road a subterranean wonderland awaits.
The Margate Caves is reached through a narrow chalk tunnel, adorned with cave paintings and murals dating back to Georgian times. Originally a chalk mine, the Caves have been variously used as a gentleman’s den, air raid shelter and a Victorian tourist attraction. Restored and reopened in 2019 with a café, gift shop, community and conference facilities, the Caves have been entertaining underground explorers since 1863. Merging a tale of landscape, ecology, geology and anthropology, the fascinating story of Margate Caves will help people think differently about Margate's heritage and community.
