​The picturesque ancient Cinque Port town of Sandwich boasts some of the best-preserved, half-timbered houses in the country

Sandwich in White Cliffs Country, Kent was one of the original Cinque Ports and has been termed “the completest medieval town in Britain”. Sandwich captivates visitors with its perfectly preserved architecture, peaceful and romantic vibes and quaint, idyllic charm.

Follow the Town Trail through narrow winding streets, explore the history of Sandwich at the Guildhall Museum and see its own Magna Carta and Charter of the Forest. Take a guided tour and discover a street plan that’s much the same as when the Domesday Book was commissioned. Browse  independent shops for gifts, antiques and curios.  Climb St Peter’s Church tower for fabulous views across the rooftops, then wander down to the quayside for a waterfront meal and perhaps a river trip - upstream to the Roman Fort at Richborough, or out to sea past a thriving colony of seals.

Wildlife enthusiasts will also love to stroll around the nature reserves and visit Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory. Cycle routes weave through Sandwich and along the neighbouring coastline, along with many beautiful walking routes. Sandwich has fantastic golf, with two Championship links courses including Royal St George’s, ranked the number one links course in England (Golf World Top 100 Rankings 2021) and host to The 149th Open. 

Work to transform Sandwich’s Guildhall Square in Sandwich, to provide a welcoming space for everyone’s use and enjoyment, began in September 2022. The highways work is expected to take eight weeks with the full project due for completion by Spring 2023. Disruption will be kept to a minimum with access maintained for local businesses. The Guildhall Square will remain open to pedestrians as much as possible.
