250 years of engineering history in beautiful rural Suffolk, telling the story of the firm and town that Richard Garrett established in 1778.

The Long Shop Museum was created in 1984 to preserve and commemorate the history of Richard Garrett Engineering, world famous as manufacturers of steam engines, agricultural equipment and machinery, for over 200 years. Established in 1778, the company expanded rapidly in the mid 1800s, culminating in the construction of the world's first assembly line building (hence the name 'Long Shop') in 1852.
