The Humber Bridge is a 2,220 metre single-span suspension bridge between Hessle and Barton-upon-Humber and was built between 1973 and 1981.

The Humber Bridge is a masterpiece of British engineering and a major attraction in its own right. At 7,280ft (2,220m) it is one of the world's longest single span suspension bridges and in fact, it is still the world’s longest suspension bridge that you can walk or cycle!

History of the Humber Bridge
Before the arrival of the railways, water transportation was the most efficient means of moving heavy or bulk freight and the Humber, situated at the heart of the waterway system associated with the Trent and the Ouse, was one of the chief highways of England. To cater for local and, as time progressed, wider needs ferries were provided across many of the creeks along both banks of the river and in 1315 a ferry between Hull and Lincolnshire was established. By 1800 the ferry had become fully integrated into the overland transport system. The ferry service between Hull and New Holland ended with the opening of the Humber Bridge on 24th June 1981 by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

If you choose to walk the Humber Bridge, you will notice QR codes at key points. Scan these on your phone to open videos explaining more about the history of the bridge, some interesting facts and archive footage.

Walking and cycling
Walkers and cyclists are welcome to cross the Humber Bridge free of charge and enjoy some seriously impressive views. There are viewing telescopes throughout the 1.4 mile journey to enhance your experience too. You can access the footpath from both the North bank (the East Yorkshire side) or the South bank between 5am to 9pm.

Viewing area
The best place to view the Humber Bridge is Hessle Foreshore. There is plenty of free parking and it is an ideal spot to enjoy a stroll along the River Humber with the Humber Bridge providing the perfect backdrop. You will also find a children’s play area, public toilets and a cosy pub, the Country Park Inn, here too.
