The medieval Old Town is a quiet, charming side full of fascinating architecture and cultural riches. So take time out of your hectic holidaying to explore it to the full.

Perhaps the best way to do just that is by following the Old Town Trail. Pick up a free trail leaflet from the Tourist Information Centre and you're all set for a journey through the quirky and colourful past. Start at the top of the ancient Market Place (it's been lovingly restored, complete with stocks!) and check out the Corn Exchange House and grand Westgate building (it now houses the HSBC bank).

Mosey through the historic streets and alleyways and soak up the atmosphere as you head towards the Priory Church. It was way back in 1537 that Henry VIII took it upon himself to demolish the monastery here. At that time the town boasted one of the largest monasteries in the North of England. He did a pretty good job out of it, too, but thankfully the glorious nave still survives as the wonderful Priory church. Drop in and you'll feel the air tremble with the past.

With your history head on, check out the hugely popular Bayle Museum. Dating back 800 years and once the gateway to the Priory, this Grade I listed building and scheduled ancient monument today features computerised games, listening posts and displays to explore.

Time for a spot of refreshment? You'll be spoilt for choice. Try the Georgian Tea Rooms where you can order a scrumptious Yorkshire high tea or a full meal hand cooked on the premises. Then there are the comfy pubs serving home prepared dishes packed with local produce.

Raring to go again, dive into the antique shops and have a good old rummage - you never know your luck, you might turn up a bargain! And don't forget to go gallery-hopping. You'll find lots of top class galleries competing for your attention. Artists have always flocked to Bridlington, attracted by the wonderful light and the sense of history. Each gallery showcases beautiful items from paintings to ceramics and designer jewellery, and you're always welcome to browse and chat about the works on display.

What you won't see much of, we're proud to say, are familiar national chains on our High Street. Instead, this special place is brimming with local, independent shops and boutiques. So if you fancy a little retail therapy, you'll find this a shopping expedition unlike any other.
