Enjoy amazing contemporary art exhibitions in a former military gymnasium
The Gymnasium Gallery hosts an ambitious programme by regional and national contemporary visual artists including newly commissioned work, installations and artists films. Previous artists who have exhibited include Catherine Yass, Bethan Huws Mark S Gubb and Turner Prize winner Douglas Gordon.
Programme highlights from 2019 include Hand to Mouth by internationally renowned artist Tania Kovats (15 June – 8 September) who makes drawings, sculpture, installations, writing and large-scale projects that explore our experience, understanding and relationship with the natural world.
This new body of work looks at water as a boundary, both psychological and physical. Kovats is particularly interested in how the River Tweed, which flows through the Scottish borders into Northumberland has acted as a geopolitical boundary for this commission will journey the river from source to mouth.
