Discover the coast your way and reduce your impact on the environment

Want to explore our incredible coast, but prefer to travel by rail or public transport? No problem! The English Coast has a long history of rail travel, it was once the only way to get to many of our seaside towns and is still a popular choice today.

You can also explore large parts of the rural coast and our key landmarks using bus routes that meander along the coastline, or by organised day tours from coastal towns or, if you're feeling active, walk the coastal path or hire a bike!

For international travellers you can also benefit from discounted rail or coach passes that make the journey that bit easier!

Exploring the coast by sustainable transport.

Many coastal towns are connected to the train network either as part of a main line train from major cities or regional rail network. For international travellers the BritRail pass offers exceptional value and unlimited travel by train over a set number of days.

Once at the coast, many areas are best explored via one of the coastal bus routes – some of the most spectacular routes are the Jurassic Coast route, Yorkshire and Northumberland coasts where bus services run the entire length of the coast.

You’re never far from a coastal town or village offering lots of options for accommodation and most attractions now include information on their websites about how to visit using public transport, with many offering discounted entry if you show your bus or rail ticket.

The Green Tourism scheme highlights businesses that reach certain sustainable standards, businesses often display their award on their website and at the business entrance.

The best way to explore the coastline not easily accessible by road or rail is by cycle hire or on foot via the coastal path. There are also an increasing number of providers offering hire of electric cars.

Stay green on your visit to the Coast!
