Destination Focus: Redcar & Cleveland – a coastline of contrasts

Where better for a bracing taste of salty sea air than the sweeping stretches of sand on the beaches of Redcar and Cleveland on the North Yorkshire Coast? This is the gateway to the majestic North York Moors National Park, home to bucket-and-spade family fun but also surfing, horse-racing, golf and much more!

The beauty of Redcar and Cleveland’s coastline is its contrasts – wave-pounded cliffs, wide bays and eight sweeping miles of unbroken sands, spanning South Gare to Saltburn-by-the-Sea.

Take the Saltburn Cliff Tramway to the north east’s last remaining pier, visit the impressive home and gardens of Ormesby Hall or drop into Saltburn Farmer’s Market, one of the best in the entire north east, this stretch of coast is an unsung holiday hero.

There’s traditional seaside charm by the bucketful at Redcar, stroll along the Esplanade, scale the 80-foot Redcar Beacon for panoramic sea views. Or visit Marske-by-the-Sea, just two miles from Redcar but a more tranquil spot which stretches on to the Blue Flag Saltburn-by-the-Sea

Want to explore on two wheels? Guisborough Forest, the Cleveland Coast and the North Yorkshire Moors National Park are all right on the doorstep and perfect for exploring by bike. Redcar and Cleveland host part of the long-distance National Cycle Network from Middlesbrough to Staithes, offering outstanding coastal views.

This stretch of the Yorkshire coast features no less than six impressive art galleries offering a host of exhibitions, while theatre-goers have the choice of three venues staging live performances.

After being closed for more than 30 years the Grade II listed Kirthleatham Walled Garden flung open its gates in August 2021. It’s been painstakingly restored back to its former glory with ornate formal gardens, a splash area, art gallery, glasshouse and unmissable tea rooms serving mouth-watering home-baked favourites and hot meals.

The garden originally provided fresh fruit and veg to Kirkleatham Hall and you can still stock up on seasonally-changing home-grown produce and plants and local craft, perfect in time for Christmas! And if you’ve got a big event in mind, its 350-seat pavilion is the perfect setting for weddings, dinners and celebrations.

You’ll also discover the very best local delicacies, artisan breads, wild and garden herbs, handmade cheeses, English wines and micro-brewery beers at Saltburn Farmer’s Market, whether you’re after gourmet Scotch eggs or chilli plants, you’ll find it here.

Equally diverse is the area’s choice of accommodation, check-into a comfy hotel, friendly B&B, a yurt or shepherd’s hut!
