Destination Focus: A Taste of Dartmouth

Set on the banks of the achingly pretty River Dart, the historic Devon town of Dartmouth is one of the loveliest spots for a break by the sea.

Looking for things to do around Dartmouth? We've highlighted some of the events to look out for this year

Let the kids explore rock pools, flop on the beach listening to waves or run along the beach with the dog, whether you’re after energising water sports or total relaxation, Dartmouth’s friendly vibe makes it a must-visit.

If you’re after beaches, take your pick from Castle Cove or Sugary Cove next to Dartmouth Castle, they’re as enticing as their names suggest.

With a history dating back to the Domesday Book of 1086, it’s little wonder that Dartmouth is awash in culture, heritage and wonderfully historic buildings. Visit castles, forts, museums and historic sites but far from living in the past, the town is alive with art; galleries of local artists line its cobbled streets, enjoy live music, concerts and film screenings at the Flavel Arts Centre.

If you’re looking to celebrate, plug an event into your itinerary for added memory-making. Aside from seasonal events, Dartmouth Regatta in August, Dartmouth Food Festival in October and Dartmouth Shakespeare Week performed against the stunning backdrop of Dartmouth Castle in July are all big draws but only scratch the surface of the town’s event programme. Where else will you find Woofstock UK, a festival by dogs for dogs? Find a full list of events in Dartmouth here.

No escape is complete without a stylish dining occasion. This is the place to discover a taste of Devon, you’re sure to find local produce on most local pubs and restaurants menus and you’re certainly guaranteed the freshest catch of the day and locally grown produce from the Devon countryside.

Visit Dartmouth Farmer’s Market in the Old Market Square every second Saturday morning of the month for wonderful local produce, food and drink from farm shops, vineyards and more. From the bustle of the water side to upscale fine-dining or fish ‘n’ chips on the sand, the town offers options for every budget but don’t miss fresh Devon crab, a Dartmouth speciality.
